RF Signal Chain

Learn how RF interconnects and passive components contribute to a complete signal path.

Map connectors and cables

Document each connection by connector family, gender, impedance, frequency range, and mechanical or environmental constraints. Select cables for the intended routing, flexibility, shielding, and handling conditions, then account for their frequency-dependent loss. Confirm mating compatibility and installation guidance in the relevant documentation; a connector that fits physically is not necessarily electrically or mechanically suitable.

Understand filters, couplers, and dividers

A filter shapes which frequency components pass through a path; its passband, rejection, insertion loss, and power limits must fit the use case. A directional coupler samples or routes part of a signal, while a divider distributes an input among output paths. Review the documented frequency range, coupling or division behavior, isolation, port arrangement, impedance, and power handling. Do not infer exact performance where it is not stated.

Check end-to-end effects and records

Evaluate the complete chain rather than considering each part in isolation. Connector transitions and cable runs add loss; mismatch can cause reflections; component interactions can affect levels and frequency response. Record the intended port connections, reference planes, component identifiers, and any assumptions. Plan measurements at appropriate points using suitable methods and equipment, and compare results only with documented requirements.
